It made the news when a truck carrying an unarmed missile booster overturned in northwestern North Dakota. Actually, everyone
was happy about the "unarmed" part. And people figured there would be an investigation, and someone would be held accountable for the accident. But
who would have thought it would cost $5.6 million to recover the missile and truck.
For comparison:The Burleigh County Commission recently gave the go ahead for $5.5 million in bond to finance an indoor swimming facility at Bismarck State College property. Mandan is making improvements in its water treatment plan for $4.5 million and adding a southside water reservoir for $8.6 million. Oil industry people put the price tag for drilling a Bakken oil well in the Williston Basin at $5 million. The North Dakota Legislature authorized a $5.7 million overhaul of its computers system (well this last one doesn't count).
The missile and truck recovery isn't one of those $600 hammers bought by the Department of Defense (urban myth), it's much worse.
