Price Per Pound originated from a conversation Mark Anderson (of Air Cushions USA) and I had in 1989 when we purchased our first set of air bags. His thoughts on fairly incorporating the value of the load, the difficulty of the recovery, environmental factors, and risk exposure were the seeds that became PPP.
PPP "went public" in the Nov. 1990 of Towing and Recovery Phootnotes in a front page article written by myself titled "How Does the View Smell From Back There?" At the time I mentioned that our company had been using a charging system based on weight. The rate system itself was published the following year (June 1991) as the lead article after we had used it a few more months and fine tuned it. (I knew it was ready for the public after my wife billed and collected on a rollover that came in while I was at the Florida show that year.) PPP generated positive response from towing operators all over the country and slowly gained acceptance as operators tried it and found that it worked. Over the years I found the need to publish and explain PPP several more times to address various issues concerning it's use. Both Phootnotes and Tow Times published it. It has since been endorsed by several nationally recognized industry leaders.
