Troubled tow company taken out of business
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A towing company that's been under investigation for several months is now shut down. Palm Beach County has revoked the license of King's Wrecker Service.
King's Wrecker Service at 6738 Wallis Road caught the attention of authorities after they got complaints from the public. But now, King's can no longer do business in Palm Beach County.
When sheriff's deputies swarmed King's Wrecker Service in early July, they had a search warrant.
They spent hours there, checking cars in the impound lot, hauling out computers and various records, and searching the place from top to bottom.
Deputies said at the time they had complaints that King's was towing cars in violation of a county ordinance that requires authorization to do so.
The owner of King's denied any wrongdoing when we spoke to him that day, while deputies were executing the search warrant.
"I've been following the letter of the law. That's what I've been doing," said John Devia, owner of King's Wrecker Service, on July 8. "What is the letter of the law? Exactly what the ordinance requires us to do to be able to tow, that's what we've been following. We try to make sure we follow everything that the ordinance says."
On Sept. 10, Palm Beach County Consumer Affairs Division revoked King's Wrecker Service license.
Now that the place is shut down, there's a "for sale" sign on site.
Cars remain parked inside the fences at King's impound lot. Some of the cars may have been towed there when Kings was still in business. How do those people get their cars back?
"They're gonna have to go to the court system," said Sgt. John Churchill, of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. "There are mechanisms in place for them to actually go back and be able to retrieve their property. Of course they'll have to prove it's their property."
Consumer affairs has revoked King's license, but the sheriff's investigation into possible wrongdoing is not finished.
"We're trying to get it done as quickly as possible," Churchill said. "It's really hard to say where we are cause we're still going through material."
Charges will be up to the state attorney's office once the investigation is complete, Churchill said.
WPEC-CBS12 called the owner of King's Wrecker Service for comment, but he hung up on us.
