Friend of Museum	Tags : None Remove this ad I am wondering what your thoughts are about billing for rolled over tractor trailer wrecks with the Price Per Pound billing method.. I mean you teach a course on billing for wrecks, and I am wondering what your thoughts are. I know that in Mass you are regulated on some towed, I believe it is NON CONSENT TOWS, and as such I know your rates are set by the PUC or what ever agency it is up there ?? I am just trying to start a conservation about this with you "To be honest, I'm more worried about what the government can do to me than what they can do for me." If not their way, then they get defensive and usually end the conversation. This is just my experience with them. If they read this then maybe you will get some kind of response. Steve

Posts: 5 08/20/11 08:50:24	Well I don't want to over step here because obviously I am not Bob but being that I speak regularly at the RBU seminars and help out with the classes, maybe I can shed some light on it. They are not regulated on HD Recovery so it's not an issue for these type of jobs. Bob believes in billing hourly with minimums because that is probably the most accepted method. Nothing against PPP but it still seems to invoke an "untrust" with some adjusters. I'll admit this is based on the lack of knowledge or the "unknown"....and like any method....some people abuse the tactic. BigWheel uses their hourly structure with 4 hr min. which from what I have seen, nearly always covers the job. I have seen rollovers done with cushions and completed inside of 2hrs portal to portal. Now not every company can do that because quite frankly it takes a substantial amount of equipment, all available at a moments notice. But billing in this manner has developed an uniformity in their invoices. And they bill the same rates for everyone....so if a customer calls for lets say a dump on it's side, the rate is the same as if the police called for a TT over the enbankment. The primary concern on all recoveries for them is time. They are adiment to clear the scene as quickly as possible and all enfaphisis is placed on that factor instead of minimizing equipment or cost for the task on hand. They are very big on being prepared for whatever comes up so on a TT rollover, both rotators, support truck, trailer w/ loader and other support equipment are dispatched. That's the only way that you can pull off the completion times that quickly. Steve, I believe you have been vocal publicly about BWR and their methods in a negative manner. I don't believe that you would find other people to agree with your analogy there because I know for a fact that Bob & Eric talk to many towers every day...that is fact. I don't see your opinion as being non bias because you have shown your cards in the past but irregardless...it's your opinion and you have a right to it. Thanks, Ed

Posts: 2 08/20/11 09:24:42	Ibflat2, To answer your question on price TY Up North it's just not used,like Ed said 4hr min. is what works for us.I just did figure a job for a Law suit for another recovery company an I did use PPP TO check against our regular method for court an it came out just about the same price . It's easy to figure an I might us it again when defending another tower. I know up here we will screw up these ajusters if we introduce this to them. And I am glad that you will look at it and see how it works a bit more, but just becasue it is and was not accepted in your area does not mean that it can not be implemented there. Remember 20 years ago, there were very few hydraulic recovery units in use on the heavy duty side. Change and progress is the key. Now not saying that your rates and rolling everything to be prepared for any thing that might happen is the key either. I have looked at some bills from the NE also... Each area has its own pricing and it varies state to state... Road One tried for a "NATIONAL PRICE SYSTEM" for all thier contractors and companies and we all know how that worked out, and yeah I know many of the other reasons they failed. But what I am saying is that Price Per Pound is not a "SET IN STONE" rate structure and the prices vary around the country. Ease of use is the key for Price Per Pound as you can work up the prices in like 5 minutes and have the figures done. I have been in the business 33 plus years and I know how hard it is to figure out bills with multiple equipment, personnel, subcontractors, and stuff like that. Been there done it and managed to keep all my hair. But like you say in many statements, what works for you is what you use. Four hour minumums would not fly down here in Alabama as we are more laid back and easy going. Yeah we have the pressure to get the job done, and I have done many jobs with air cushions and tow trucks where the time is under 4 hours start to finish. But should I be penalized by my own company policies on pricing when I have the needed equipment and the training and skills to "WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER" ???? That is why the Price Per Pound billing system came to be created by Stormin Norman. (PS who really cares what the adjusters think as they are always changing the game on us as to accepted practices on paying claims and what is covered and not covered) "To be honest, I'm more worried about what the government can do to me than what they can do for me." Posts: 148 08/22/11 10:06:18	I am very sorry that you have the feelings that you seem to have about me. I do not believe that you can show me anywhere that I have bashed BW or their methods. Yes I have had questions and they were never answered. If asking questions is being negative then I guess we can all go live in caves, ask no questions, get no answers, and everbody will be happy forever like in the fairy tales. With that being said, thank you Ed and Bob for answering. I also am from the south and face the same problems as Richard and that is what causes me to ask questions about the way things are done in other parts of the country. That does not mean I am being negative, I am just looking for answers and looking for things that will help me in my business. Thanks Steve

No that's not what I am saying at all....actually the opposite. What I am saying is that if you get lets say $7xx. an hr for your rotator with a 4 hr. min on that TT rollover....then do the same for that dump truck as well. Obviosly the TT bill we be more because there will be more involved (equipment, man power ect...). I see many times where a guy gets $20 grand for a wreck but then will go do the rolled dump for $800. If your tator is only worth 800 on that dump then what makes it worth 5 grand on the TT rollover? I'm saying to charge a rate for what the equipment is and is being used...not based on the casualty. If a tator is justified for the task then charge the fixed rate that you have established to justify your expense, liability, exposure and profit. Now some guys will nod their head yes and kind of agree, but then take it to the next level....recover a car over a guard rail or similar. Then some will start talking about the size of the truck and what not...like it is over kill. The bottom line is that if the piece of equipment will work better, if you can swing the vehicle out of the perdiciment, then there is your justification for it. Do the job and invoice what the equipment is worth. The 5000# SUV is the same work out as the 18,000# tractor or 25,000# dump truck to a 75 ton rotator....your difference being in your rigging properly for the load at hand. None of them is going to make more wear & tear on the wrecker. Bill what the truck is worth while it is being operated with in the spectrum of it's capabilities. I'm using a rotator here for example but the theory stands true for any piece of equipment. As well...the theory is the same when you look at the other side of the coin. Lets say I get $350 to pull a box truck out of the mud with the HD. If I use my 12 ton to do the job due to area restrictions or locations...it is still going to do the same task so I charge the same money. I will have to change my rigging to accommodate the task but my goal is the same...and so should be the compensation. Posts: 148 01/19/12 11:45:47	Remove this ad I am totally confused. Not trying to be smart but my dumb backwoods ways do not let me understand all this. In the above answer para 2 states to set a rate for equipment and stick to that rate no matter what the job is. Para 3 also states to bill for whatever truck is being used. Para 4 states to bill for what the job is worth with no regard as to what truck is used. Can someone clarify this for me so I can understand if I need to bill by the job or bill by the equip I use on the job. Steve
