Posts: 52 12/04/09 10:16:49	Tags : None Had a Pete pullin a hopper bottom loaded with chicken feed. Ran off the road and layed over down a bad muddy ditch within site of my shop yesterday morning Trailer was open top so it dumped approx half of the feed out...put 4 people with scoops in that sucker and in less than 20 min it was unloaded uprighted and brought it to the yard in less than 1.5 hours......so how would one justify useing PPP on this recovery LOL owner lived close by so he was on scene ...he's taken care of the feed in the ditch so very little cleanup (a little mud on the road) used my 30 ton and f-550 wrecker when it came time to right the bill I said crap....we did this intirely too fast..what by all rights should have been a fairly expensive job wasn't and figureing PPP was intirely too much ... any advise for the next time other than slow down <grin>?? Posts: 52 12/04/09 16:30:14	the owner is from malvern but was at Sheridan when his truck wrecked so he was on scene just a few min after we were ...Dont know the dude but seems nice enough...says he will be doing the paying..the trailer was borrowed and truck was his (you know how these bean and corn, feed haulers do ) side of trailer buckled pretty good and he wanted to go ahead and take it to pineBluff trailer to have fixed so I let him take it....truck got beat up pretty good but fixable ..00 pete 379 and was in pretty desent shape before from looking at it...the problem yesterday was he wanted to know how much this was going to cost him LOL and after he said he would be doing the paying I wrote up the bill... only 1.5 hrs on scene but after gettin it back to the shop I spent another hr disconnecting the trailer ,moveing it around so he could get it and got everything back in order so on the bill I was able to justify 2.5 for the heavy..put down 2 for the 550 and 4 helpers at 60 per hr each...pushed the envolope gettin those hrs LOL ...bill was a tad over 2500..... figured it PPP (80k) and it came out to 7200 (normal recovery @ 8.5 cents) I dont know .. for the time spent the bill seems fair enough but looking and reading about this type recovery I cant help think we short changed ourselves ...the PPP price simply seemed way high to me although if I knew the petuculars conserning insurance I prob would have tried it out on them...first recovery i've had I think PPP would apply to ..."but" no cleanup so there again not sure...he said he would take care of getting the feed out of the ditch and trooper was ok with it (deer will prob eat it ) all insurance questions were sorta sidestepped by him and answered with "I will do the paying" give me a total bill all my other heavy recoverys me and the customer were happy with...this time the customer is happy and i'm left wondering WTF lol were did I screw up or drop the ball ?? The owner handled the cargo clean up (the grain or corn) and as you said it unloaded most of it. Way I have done in the past on these is that I bill for the empty weight of the truck and trailer, as the cargo is not salvageable. If he did the clean up then he saved a bit of money. You know that if the load was gravel or sand it could spread out a bit and not be a problem, like a load of scrap metal or a van trailer full of clothes. I would use 35,000 pounds on the weight, maybe 30,000 if it was a day cab, and bill it at the PPP rate you use. Yes jobs like this tend to be fast and that is where PPP is very profitable, unlike the labor intensive reloads into other trailers. 35K times the .085 cpp = 2975.00 so you were not far off on using hourly (notice how close it is in price) and you can go either way then. Maybe start out with the PPP bill and if there is a problem discount it down to the rate using hourly but still show it as PPP. NOW ABOUT THE BOOK... Darn printers are driving me nuts about printing it as they keep telling me that it needs this, or format it a different way... About to go buy a color laser printer and the binding machines and do it myself for all the hassles I have been thought. Just goes to show that each and every one has its own circumstances that make it different from some other one I was playing it against my very first heavy recovery..a rolled over log truck and the bill was about the same and it just didn't seem right ..however it was 25 miles away.. wait time envolved and a little log moveing kind of intresting about the cleanup on this one...owner says he will take care of it but so far hasn't (trooper ok'ed it ) yet the pile is half gone already...people are stopping and getting buckets,bags whatever full of that durn stuff and takeing it away so question...do the owners have the option to do their own cleanup and save money on a recovery if they choose to do so ?? or do we as the recovery company have the option to do it at our descretion even if they want to do it ...hope that makes sense actualy in this case i'm glad he did take resposibility for it ....but still leary of this deal as its somewhat of a traffic hazzard or could be with all those people stopping and gettin it Jim

Friend of Museum	The owner of the truck is usually responsible for the clean up of all spills, be it cargo or fuel etc. Now that being said the costs are much better to their bottom line if they do the clean up other than in a haz mat issue. That has a ton of extra paperwork and responsibility involved in it. I would prefer that the customer does most of the clean up on spilled grains, construction supplies and logs. We really do not have the equipment to clean up the product and dispose of it properly (ok we can cut up the logs and burn them in the fire place) but you know what I mean. Depending on state laws you most likely can let the trucking company clean up the debris, but remember when you are doing that and billing via PPP you have to take into account them doing the clean up as you can not charge for all the work and weight that way.
