The tell-tale noise of a diesel engine pulling up beside your parked car.

It's a sound no one wants to hear.

Brian Tierney was in the shower when, "I heard a diesel pull up and then I heard some chains and flew out here right away because I already knew what it was."

Mike Reigh says, "I basically think they stole my truck for $231."

Both men had their cars towed without their permission.

"We probably get complaints at least once a day if not more," says Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) Commissioner Monica Metz.

Marshall Rigsbee suspected something wasn't right when his car was towed from the Chevys restaurant parking lot in Clackamas Promenade last month, even though he was certain it was legally parked.
He called Set Towing and found himself talking to Ryan Patrick Joynt.
"He told me there was a misunderstanding," Rigsbee said, "and that I could have my car back for a $100 tip."


But when Rigsbee arrived at Southeast 166th Avenue and Foster Road to retrieve his 1987 BMW, Joynt wanted more than $300. A tow truck leaves the Northwest Portland impound lot of Retriever Towing, the largest of Portland's "patrol towing" companies. Drivers are typically paid by commission, a system that essentially turns them into sneaky bounty hunters. A physically disabled woman was told "too bad, so sad" by a driver from Ultimate Towing after she asked for a ride to the lot where the company had towed her car, she said.

But walking to the lot was not an option for Ashley Gregg, 24. She uses with a cane due to degenerative disk disease, which affects the spine. She can travel no more than 50 or 60 feet without resting.

"You get the ticket, you pay the fine," Gregg said. "It's more that I was left stranded as a handicapped person that worries me."

Citizen complaints about aggressive towing practices are prompting Davenport's legal department to write an ordinance dealing with companies that perform "non-consensual" tows.

Currently, the city has only antiquated ordinances, which aren't enforced because of concerns about conflicts with the federal Motor Carriers Act, Davenport Corporate Counsel Tom Warner said.

Planning to party at Dos Gringos in Tempe this weekend? Watch where you park, lest you leave the club to find an empty slab of asphalt where your car used to be. Starting on Thursday nights, local towing companies have been having a heyday hauling vehicles from unauthorized parking spaces. The weekend of September 12-14, more than 40 vehicles were towed from the area. In many cases, clubgoers didn't realize they were parking in tow-away zones, and were shocked when they had to shell out upwards of $140 each to retrieve their vehicles.

The tow company said he needed a special McCall's permit, as well. Meier spent the past five months contesting the tow, and last week got a $194 refund.

The towing debate in Rexburg keeps getting hotter, with more and more cars coming to the college town, parking spots are extremely difficult to find.
Understandably students don't want their cars to get towed, and the owner of the towing company says, that's great, if you park legally.
